소네트(Sonnet) 47

- 셰익스피어(Shakespeare)

내 눈과 가슴 사이에 동맹이 체결되니

이제 서로는 서로에게 호의를 베풀 수 있구나

눈이 보고 싶은 갈망에 죽을 지경이거나

가슴이 사랑에 숨이 막혀 질식할 지경이면

눈은 사랑하는 이의 그림으로 향연을 열고

가슴을 초대해 함께 그 그림을 감상한다

다른 기회에는 이번엔 눈이 가슴의 손님이 되어

가슴이 품은 사랑의 생각들을 함께 나눈다

그러니 그림을 통해서든 사랑을 통해서든

멀리 떨어져 있어도 당신은 여전히 나와 함께한다

당신은 내 생각들 너머로 여행할 수 없고

나는 그들과 그들은 당신과 늘 함께하기 때문이다

혹여, 그들이 잠들어도, 내 시야 속 당신의 그림은

가슴을 깨워, 가슴과 눈은 함께 그 기쁨을 누린다

Betwixt mine eye and heart a league is took,

And each doth good turns now unto the other.

When that mine eye is famished for a look,

Or heart in love with sighs himself doth smother,

With my love’s picture then my eye doth feast

And to the painted banquet bids my heart.

Another time mine eye is my heart’s guest,

And in his thoughts of love doth share a part.

So either by thy picture or my love,

Thyself away are present still with me;

For thou no farther than my thoughts canst move,

And I am still with them, and they with thee;

  Or if they sleep, thy picture in my sight

  Awakes my heart to heart’s and eye’s delight.
