다른 두 원소, 산뜻한 공기와 정화의 불은

내가 어디 매여 있든 당신과 함께 한다

공기는 내 생각이요, 불은 내 욕망이니

없이 있는 둘은 우리 사이를 날래게 오가는구나

사랑을 전하는 다정한 대사가 되어

이 재빠른 원소들이 사라지고 나면

생명을 이루는 네 원소 중 둘만 남은 내 삶은

저 날랜 메신저들이 당신에게서 돌아와

내 몸 속 생명의 조화가 부활하기 전까지

죽음으로 빠져든다, 비애에 짓눌려

방금도 그들이 내게 돌아와

당신의 안녕함을 알려주었다

그 소식 들으니 기쁘구나, 그러나 그것도 잠시

나는 다시 그들을 돌려보내고 슬픔은 즉시 나를 잠식한다

The other two, slight air and purging fire,

Are both with thee, wherever I abide;

The first my thought, the other my desire,

These present absent with swift motion slide.

For when these quicker elements are gone

In tender embassy of love to thee,

My life, being made of four, with two alone

Sinks down to death, oppressed with melancholy;

Until life’s composition be recured

By those swift messengers returned from thee,

Who ev'n but now come back again, assured

Of thy fair health, recounting it to me.

  This told, I joy, but then no longer glad,

  I send them back again and straight grow sad.
