여행 하는 발걸음이 무겁기 짝이 없다

갈망하던, 내 고달픈 하루의 끝은

안도와 휴식을 시켜 내게 이렇게 말할 뿐이다

"이토록 많이 너는 친구에게서 멀어졌다!"

슬픔에 지친 나를 태운 짐승도

내 슬픔의 무게를 견디며 멍청히 터벅터벅 걷는다

이 불쌍한 것도 본능적으로 아나 보다

등 뒤에 탄 자가 당신에게서 빨리 멀어지는 것을 원치 않음을

때로 화가 나 놈을 호되게 매질하며

피가 나도록 박차를 가해봐도 놈은 분발하지 않고

무거운 신음으로 응답할 뿐이니

그 소리로 내가 준 것보다 더 아프게 되갚는구나

놈의 신음이 일깨워준다

슬픔은 내 앞에, 기쁨은 내 뒤에 있다는 것을

How heavy do I journey on the way

When what I seek (my weary travel’s end)

Doth teach that ease and that repose to say,

“Thus far the miles are measured from thy friend.”

The beast that bears me, tired with my woe,

Plods dully on to bear that weight in me,

As if by some instinct the wretch did know

His rider loved not speed, being made from thee.

The bloody spur cannot provoke him on

That sometimes anger thrusts into his hide,

Which heavily he answers with a groan,

More sharp to me than spurring to his side;

  For that same groan doth put this in my mind:

  My grief lies onward and my joy behind.
