소네트(Sonnet) 12

- 셰익스피어(Shakespeare)

시간을 알리는 시계소리 울리고

저 장엄한 낮이 오싹한 밤 속으로 가라앉는 것을 볼 때

제비꽃의 절정이 지나

그 흑단같은 머리가 하얗게 세는 것을 볼 때

양떼에게 그늘이 되어주었던

저 도도하게 솟은 나무의 잎들이 앙상해지고

여름의 푸릇했던 곡식이 다발로 묶여

그 하얗고 억센 수염을 늘어뜨린 채 상여에 실려나가는 것을 볼 때

바로 그때, 나는 당신의 아름다움을 생각한다 

당신 또한 시간의 유린을 겪어야만 하기 때문이다

달콤함도 아름다움도 스스로를 저버리고

다른 것들이 자라는 만큼이나 빠르게 죽나니

시간이 내리치는 사신의 낫은 막을 수 없다

그가 당신을 데려갈 때 그에게 거역할 자식이 없다면

When I do count the clock that tells the time,

And see the brave day sunk in hideous night;

When I behold the violet past prime,

And sable curls all silvered o'er with white;

When lofty trees I see barren of leaves,

Which erst from heat did canopy the herd,

And summer’s green all girded up in sheaves

Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard;

Then of thy beauty do I question make,

That thou among the wastes of time must go,

Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake

And die as fast as they see others grow,

  And nothing 'gainst Time’s scythe can make defense

  Save breed to brave him when he takes thee hence.
