소네트 5(Sonnet 5)

- 셰익스피어(Shakespeare)

시간은 부드러운 손길로

모든 사람의 시선이 머무는 저 아름다운 얼굴을 빚었으나

시간은 또한 폭군이 되어

그 눈부시게 아름다운 얼굴을 망쳐놓는구나

휴식을 모르는 시간은 여름을 

끔찍한 겨울로 끌고가 파멸시키니

수액은 얼어붙고 무성한 잎은 사라지고

아름다움은 눈에 덮여 황량함만이 남는구나

그때 여름의 정수를 붙잡아

유리병 속에 유폐시키지 못한다면

여름의 아름다움은 물론 그 아름다움이 낳은 열매들마저 잃을지니

결국 여름도, 여름의 기억도 사라질 것이다

그러나 향수가 된 꽃은 겨울을 만나도

겉모습을 잃을 뿐, 그 아름다운 본질은 여전히 향기로울 것이다

Those hours that with gentle work did frame

The lovely gaze where every eye doth dwell

Will play the tyrants to the very same

And that unfair which fairly doth excel.

For never-resting time leads summer on

To hideous winter and confounds him there,

Sap checked with frost and lusty leaves quite gone,

Beauty o'er-snowed and bareness everywhere.

Then were not summer’s distillation left,

A liquid prisoner pent in walls of glass,

Beauty’s effect with beauty were bereft,

Nor it nor no remembrance what it was.

  But flowers distilled, though they with winter meet,

  Leese but their show; their substance still lives sweet.
