내 마음속 뮤즈에게 시상이 부족할 날이 있겠는가

존재하는 것만으로 진부한 시로는 재현할 수 없는

당신이라는 아름다운 시상이

내 싯구에 쏟아지고 있는데

아, 당신 눈길을 잡아 끄는 내 시가 있다면

당신 자신에게 고마워할 일이다

당신이 이토록 창작의 빛을 비춰주는데

당신을 보고도 시를 써내지 못할 바보가 어디 있겠는가?

저 라임이나 맞추던 자들이 숭배하던 

지난 아홉 뮤즈보다 열 배나 가치있는 열 번째 뮤즈가 되어

당신을 경배하는 그 누구에게라도

시대를 초월하는 불멸의 시를 낳게 하라

내 가냘픈 뮤즈가 혹 이 깐깐한 시대를 즐겁게 한다면

노고는 내 것이지만 찬사는 마땅히 당신의 것이리다  

How can my muse want subject to invent

While thou dost breathe, that pour’st into my verse

Thine own sweet argument, too excellent

For every vulgar paper to rehearse?

O give thyself the thanks, if aught in me

Worthy perusal stand against thy sight.

For who’s so dumb that cannot write to thee,

When thou thyself dost give invention light?

Be thou the tenth muse, ten times more in worth

Than those old nine which rhymers invocate;

And he that calls on thee, let him bring forth

Eternal numbers to outlive long date.

  If my slight muse do please these curious days,

  The pain be mine, but thine shall be the praise.
