내 뮤즈는 혀가 묶여 공손히 침묵을 지키는데

당신을 찬양하는 화려한 글들은

황금 펜으로 당신의 특징을 담고

온갖 뮤즈 도움받아 쓸만한 구절들 쌓아가는 구나 

다른 이들이 좋은 말을 쓸 때 나는 좋은 생각이나 해

잘 다듬어진 세련된 필치로

능력있는 시인이 당신을 노래할 때마다

나는 그저 까막눈인 목사가 설교하는 양 ′아멘′하고만 맞장구치도다

당신을 찬미하는 말 들으면 나는 ′그렇다, 사실이다′라고

말하면서 최고의 찬사에 뭐라도 덧붙여보려 하지만

그건 내 생각 속에서만 맴돌 뿐 당신을 사랑하는

내 마음은 누구보다 앞서 있지만 말은 뒤쳐져있구나

그러니 입에서 나오는 말의 숨결을 귀히 여기되

오직 행동으로만 말하는 내 말없는 생각도 귀히 여기라 

My tongue-tied muse in manners holds her still,

While comments of your praise, richly compiled,

Reserve their character with golden quill

And precious phrase by all the muses filed.

I think good thoughts, whilst other write good words,

And like unlettered clerk still cry “Amen”

To every hymn that able spirit affords,

In polished form of well-refinèd pen.

Hearing you praised, I say “'Tis so, ’tis true,”

And to the most of praise add something more;

But that is in my thought, whose love to you,

Though words come hindmost, holds his rank before.

  Then others for the breath of words respect,

  Me for my dumb thoughts, speaking in effect.
