조용히 앉아 생각의 법정으로

지나간 일들의 기억 소환해보면

추구했던 많은 것들 이루지 못해 한숨이 나오고

귀중한 시간들 허비한 실망에 새삼 북받치는구나

죽음 그 끝없는 밤 속으로 사라져 간 소중한 벗들 떠올라

메말랐던 내 눈엔 눈물이 흐르고

오래전 끝난 비통했던 사랑 떠올라 다시 흐느끼며

다신 볼 수 없는 수많은 사라져간 것들 떠올라 한탄한다

그렇게 나는 이미 지나간 슬픔 다시 슬퍼하기로 작정해

사연 하나 하나 애통한 마음으로 떠올리며

이미 애도했던 아픔들 다시 헤아려

전에는 아파하지 않았던 것마냥 처음부터 다시 아파한다

그러나 내 소중한 친구여, 당신을 생각하면

모든 잃어버린 것들 돌아오고 모든 슬픔 끝나는도다

When to the sessions of sweet silent thought

I summon up remembrance of things past,

I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought,

And with old woes new wail my dear time’s waste.

Then can I drown an eye unused to flow,

For precious friends hid in death’s dateless night,

And weep afresh love’s long since cancelled woe,

And moan th' expense of many a vanished sight.

Then can I grieve at grievances foregone,

And heavily from woe to woe tell o'er

The sad account of fore-bemoanèd moan,

Which I new pay as if not paid before.

  But if the while I think on thee, dear friend,

  All losses are restored, and sorrows end.
