내 눈은 화가, 당신의 아름다운 형체를 

마음의 캔버스에 그리고

내 몸은 그림 거는 틀

모든 기술 발휘해 잘 보이게 거는구나

오직 내 눈 안에서만 그 기교를 확인하고

당신의 참된 모습이 걸린 장소를 찾을 수 있으니

그림은 내 가슴 속 화랑에 가만히 걸리고

당신의 두 눈은 화랑의 창문이 된다

자 보라, 눈과 눈이 서로가 서로를 돕는 모습을

내 눈은 당신의 모습 그리고 당신의 눈은

내 가슴 속 창문이 되니 그곳으로 태양도

기쁘게 흘긋거리며 당신의 형상을 바라보는구나

허나 눈은 작품을 꾸밀 재주는 없으니

그저 보이는 것을 그릴 뿐, 그 마음은 알지 못한다

Mine eye hath played the painter and hath steeled

Thy beauty’s form in table of my heart.

My body is the frame wherein ’tis held,

And perspective it is best painter’s art.

For through the painter must you see his skill

To find where your true image pictured lies,

Which in my bosom’s shop is hanging still,

That hath his windows glazed with thine eyes.

Now see what good turns eyes for eyes have done:

Mine eyes have drawn thy shape, and thine for me

Are windows to my breast, wherethrough the sun

Delights to peep, to gaze therein on thee.

  Yet eyes this cunning want to grace their art;

  They draw but what they see, know not the heart.
