아름다움은 쓸모 있는 것보다 더 쓸모 있다

「주교는 꽃도 심어 놓았으며, 과일 나무도 심어 놓았다. 마글루아르 부인이 가볍게 투정했다.

"예하께서는 모든 걸 알뜰이 쓰면서도 이 땅만은 쓸모없이 놀리시는군요. 꽃보다는 채소를 기르는게 낫지 않을까요?"

주교가 대답했다.
"그렇지 않습니다, 마글루아르 부인. 아름다운 건 소위 쓸모 있는 것만큼이나 쓸모 있답니다."

주교는 잠시 뒤 한마디를 덧붙였다.

"어쩌면 그 이상으로 말이죠."」
