당신을 떠난 후로 내 눈은 내 마음 속에만 머문다

그리하여 내가 어디로 가야 할지 일러주어야 할 기관이

그 기능을 다 수행하지 못하고 반쯤 눈이 멀어

겉으론 보는 듯 해도 사실은 보고 있지 않구나

새도, 꽃도, 그 어떤 형상도,

눈에 들어온 것을 마음에 전해주지 못하니

마음은 눈에 비친 생동감을 담지 못하고

눈은 자신이 포착한 모습조차 보존하지 못하는구나

그것이 조잡한 것이든 우아한 것이든

세상에서 가장 아름다운 용모이든 가장 추악한 용모이든

산이든 바다든, 낮이든 밤이든, 까마귀이든 비둘기이든

눈은 그 모든 것을 당신의 모습으로 바꿔 놓는다

이미 당신으로 충만해 더 채워 넣을 여력이 없는

진실한 마음 때문에 정작 눈은 진실하지 못하는구나

Since I left you, mine eye is in my mind,

And that which governs me to go about

Doth part his function, and is partly blind,

Seems seeing, but effectually is out;

For it no form delivers to the heart

Of bird, of flow'r, or shape which it doth latch.

Of his quick objects hath the mind no part,

Nor his own vision holds what it doth catch;

For if it see the rud’st or gentlest sight,

The most sweet favor or deformèd’st creature,

The mountain, or the sea, the day, or night,

The crow, or dove, it shapes them to your feature.

  Incapable of more, replete with you,

  My most true mind thus makes mine untrue.
