아, 아름다움이 얼마다 더 아름답게 보이겠는가

진실됨이라는 그윽한 장신구가 더해진다면!

장미는 아름다우나, 그 안에 깃든 

좋은 향기 있어 더 아름다운 것이리다

들장미도 그 짙은 색채는

향기로운 장미 못지 않고

여름의 숨결이 꽃봉오리를 벗기면

가시 달린 가지에 매달려 분방하게 노는 것도 같도다

그러나 들장미가 내세울 미덕은 오직 겉모습뿐

구애도 존경도 받지 못하고 시들어

쓸모없이 죽음을 맞는다. 향기로운 장미는 그렇지 않아

그들의 아름다운 죽음은 가장 향기로운 향수를 남긴다

당신도 그렇다, 아름답고 사랑스러운 젊은이여

당신이 시들면 내 시가 당신의 진실됨을 보존하리다

O how much more doth beauty beauteous seem

By that sweet ornament which truth doth give!

The rose looks fair, but fairer we it deem

For that sweet odor which doth in it live.

The canker-blooms have full as deep a dye

As the perfumed tincture of the roses,

Hang on such thorns, and play as wantonly,

When summer’s breath their masked buds discloses;

But for their virtue only is their show,

They live unwooed, and unrespected fade,

Die to themselves. Sweet roses do not so;

Of their sweet deaths are sweetest odors made;

  And so of you, beauteous and lovely youth;

  When that shall vade, my verse distills your truth.
