아, 죄 많은 흙에 둘러싸인 내 불쌍한 영혼아

너를 감싼 육신이 너에게 반역을 꾀하는구나

영혼아, 너의 내면이 그토록 굶주리고 슬퍼하는데

왜 겉모습만 그토록 값비싸게 치장하고 있는가?

왜 그토록 많은 비용을, 왜 그토록 임대기간이 짧은

허물어져가는 저택에 허비하는가?

이 모든 사치를 결국 그것의 마지막 주인

벌레들에게 먹이려는가? 이게 육신이 바라는 종말이란 말인가?

그렇다면 영혼이여, 차라리 너의 종 육신을 희생하여 너가 살라

육신은 굶게 두고 너는 너의 창고를 채워라

지상의 덧없는 시간을 팔아 천국의 영원한 시간을 사라

속을 살찌우지, 겉을 살찌우지 말라

육신이 굶주리면 그 육신을 먹고 사는 죽음은 너에게 먹힌다

그렇게 죽음이 한번 죽으면 다시는 죽음을 맞지 않으리다

 

Poor soul, the center of my sinful earth,

[Thrall to] these rebel pow'rs that thee array,

Why dost thou pine within and suffer dearth,

Painting thy outward walls so costly gay?

Why so large cost, having so short a lease,

Dost thou upon thy fading mansion spend?

Shall worms, inheritors of this excess,

Eat up thy charge? Is this thy body’s end?

Then, soul, live thou upon thy servant’s loss,

And let that pine to aggravate thy store;

Buy terms divine in selling hours of dross;

Within be fed, without be rich no more.

  So shalt thou feed on death, that feeds on men,

  And death once dead, there’s no more dying then.
