소네트(Sonnet) 17

다가올 날 누가 내 시를 믿겠는가?

그 시가 당신의 미덕을 높이 찬양하더라도

하늘은 안다, 시는 한낱 무덤일 뿐이라는 걸

당신의 정수를 가리고 참된 당신을 절반도 보여주지 못하는

내가 당신 눈의 아름다움을 묘사하고

당신의 모든 우아함을 일일이 시로 짓는다 해도

후세 사람은 말할 것이다, ′이 시인은 거짓말을 하고 있다

세속의 얼굴이 그토록 신성한 모습으로 그려진 바는 없다′

그리하여 내 시집은 세월과 함께 누렇게 변색되어

수다스런 허풍쟁이 노인마냥 경멸당할 것이고

당신이 받아 마땅한 찬사는 시인의 광기로 치부되어

옛 시에나 쓰이는 과장된 싯구로 일축될 것이다

그러나 그때 당신의 아이가 살아 있다면 

당신은 두 번 살리라, 아이 안에서 그리고 내 시 안에서

Who will believe my verse in time to come

If it were filled with your most high deserts?

Though yet heav'n knows it is but as a tomb

Which hides your life and shows not half your parts.

If I could write the beauty of your eyes

And in fresh numbers number all your graces,

The age to come would say, “This poet lies?

Such heavenly touches ne'er touched earthly faces.”

So should my papers, yellowed with their age,

Be scorned, like old men of less truth than tongue,

And your true rights be termed a poet’s rage

And stretched meter of an antique song;

  But were some child of yours alive that time,

  You should live twice: in it and in my rhyme.
