소네트(Sonnet) 14

- 셰익스피어(Shakespeare)

별들에게서 판단을 끌어내려 하는 건 아니나

내가 점성술에 어느 정도 조예가 있는 건 사실이다

그러나 나는 운이 좋고 나쁨을 예언할 수 없고

역병, 기아, 기후를 예견할 수도 없다

또한 나는 각자 인생의 천둥, 폭우, 바람이

어떤 상세한 변화를 가져올지 예측할 수 없고

하늘에 자주 나타나는 전조를 보고

그것이 군주에게 이로울지 아닐지 말할 수도 없다

그러나 나는 당신의 눈에서 예언을 이끌어낼 수 있으니

늘 빛나는 그 별에서 나는 이것을 읽었도다

당신이 자기집착으로부터 벗어나 자신을 전한다면  

진리와 아름다움이 함께 번영할 것임을

그렇지 않을 경우 내 예언은 이렇다

당신의 최후는 진리와 아름다움의 종말이 될 것이다

Not from the stars do I my judgment pluck,

And yet methinks I have astronomy,

But not to tell of good or evil luck,

Of plagues, of dearths, or seasons' quality;

Nor can I fortune to brief minutes tell,

Pointing to each his thunder, rain, and wind,

Or say with princes if it shall go well,

By oft predict that I in heaven find;

But from thine eyes my knowledge I derive,

And, constant stars, in them I read such art

As truth and beauty shall together thrive,

If from thyself to store thou wouldst convert;

  Or else of thee this I prognosticate:

  Thy end is truth’s and beauty’s doom and date.
