아마추어와 프로

"영감이 오기를 기다리지 마라! 이것이 내가 젊은 예술가들에게 해주고 싶은 조언이다. 영감은 아마추어나 찾는 것이다. 프로는 그냥 일어서서 일하러 간다. 그저 앉아 있는데 머릿속의 구름이 걷히고 번개처럼 번쩍하는 아이디어가 떠오를 것 같은가? 최고의 아이디어는 일하는 중에 나온다. 즉, 일 자체에서 나온다. 일단 작업을 시작하고 보라. 그러면 작업이 당신을 이끌 것이다. 영감은 절대적으로 불필요한 기만적인 개념이다."*

“The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who'll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you're sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that's almost never the case.”
