한 해가 어떻게 가는지도 모르게 즐거움을 주는 당신,

그런 당신에게서 떠나 있는 시간은 한겨울 같았다

그 얼마나 추웠던가, 그 얼마나 어두운 나날이었던가!

쇠한 섣달의 황량함만이 모든 곳을 뒤덮고 있었다

그러나 사실 당신과 떨어져 있던 계절은 여름이었다

여름 후엔 곧 풍성한 열매로 가득찬 풍요로운 가을이 와

남편이 남기고 간 아이를 잉태한 과부의 자궁과 같이

봄철의 혈기가 남긴 씨앗이 결실을 맺는다

그러나 이러한 풍요로운 결실은 내게

태어나지 못한 아이였고 열매 맺지 못한 과실이었다

여름도, 여름의 기쁨도 당신의 시종이기에

당신이 떠난 곳에선 여름은 오지 않고 새들은 침묵한다

혹여 노래하여도, 그 노래는 너무 쓸쓸해

잎새마저 창백해질 것이다, 다가오는 겨울에 몸서리치면서

How like a winter hath my absence been

From thee, the pleasure of the fleeting year!

What freezings have I felt, what dark days seen!

What old December’s bareness everywhere!

And yet this time removed was summer’s time,

The teeming autumn big with rich increase,

Bearing the wanton burthen of the prime,

Like widowed wombs after their lords' decease.

Yet this abundant issue seemed to me

But hope of orphans, and unfathered fruit.

For summer and his pleasures wait on thee,

And thou away, the very birds are mute.

  Or if they sing, ’tis with so dull a cheer

  That leaves look pale, dreading the winter’s near.
