소네트(Sonnet) 67

아, 그가 왜 이토록 타락한 세상에 살아

불경한 것들을 포장하는 존재가 돼

죄인들에게 이용당하고

그들과 엮이어 그들의 장식품으로 전락해야 하는가?

왜 되도 않는 화장으로 그의 뺨을 모방하여

그의 생기있는 피부빛에서 고작 죽은 빛만 훔쳐가는가?

그의 장미는 자연이 준 것인데 왜 아름답지 않은 자들이

장미의 그림자만을 인위적으로 추구하고 있는가?

자연이 파산하여 약동하는 혈관을 통해 더는 생기와 아름다움을 

공급하지 못하는 마당에 그는 왜 계속 살아야 하는가?

그를 제외하고는 그녀의 곳간이 텅텅 빈 이때 

그녀의 소위 자랑스런 자식들은 그의 아름다움에 기대 사는구나

아, 그녀가 그를 살아있게 간직하는 것은, 이 암흑의 세월이 오기 전

과거 그녀가 얼마나 부자였나 보여주려 함이리다 

Ah, wherefore with infection should he live,

And with his presence grace impiety,

That sin by him advantage should achieve

And lace itself with his society?

Why should false painting imitate his cheek,

And steal dead seeing of his living hue?

Why should poor beauty indirectly seek

Roses of shadow, since his rose is true?

Why should he live, now nature bankrupt is,

Beggared of blood to blush through lively veins?

For she hath no exchequer now but his,

And, proud of many, lives upon his gains.

  O him she stores, to show what wealth she had

  In days long since, before these last so bad.
