- 셰익스피어(Shakespeare)

흘러간 세월을 담은 어느 옛 책에는

지극히 아름다운 사람들 적혀있다

아름다움은 아름다운 옛 시를 낳아 지금은 죽고 없는 

사랑스러운 여인들과 기사들이 찬미되고 있구나

손, 발, 입술, 눈, 이마,

그들의 아름다움이 나열된 항목을 보는 순간

나는 깨달았다 이 옛 시인이 표현하려 한 것이

바로 당신이 지금 지배하고 있는 아름다움이라는 것을

그러니 그 모든 찬사는 우리 시대를 예견하고

당신을 예시한 것에 불과하다

다만 그들은 짐작하는 눈으로만 볼 수 있었기에

당신의 진가를 충분히 노래할 수 없었구나

아, 당신을 직접 볼 수 있는 시대에 살고 있는 

우리마저 경탄할 눈은 있어도 찬미할 혀는 없구나

When in the chronicle of wasted time

I see descriptions of the fairest wights

And beauty making beautiful old rhyme

In praise of ladies dead and lovely knights,

Then in the blazon of sweet beauty’s best,

Of hand, of foot, of lip, of eye, of brow,

I see their ántique pen would have expressed

Ev'n such a beauty as you master now.

So all their praises are but prophecies

Of this our time, all you prefiguring,

And for they looked but with divining eyes,

They had not skill enough your worth to sing.

  For we which now behold these present days,

  Have eyes to wonder, but lack tongues to praise
