왜 당신은 그토록 화창한 날을 약속하여

내가 외투도 없이 여행을 떠나게 하고는

고약한 구름이 나를 따라잡게 두는가 하면

그 지독한 안개 뒤로 광휘를 감추는가?

구름 사이로 잠시 얼굴 비추어

폭우 속 내 눈물 말려주는 것으로는 부족하니

상처만 치료하고 오욕은 치유하지 못하는 

그런 연고에 누가 만족할 수 있겠는가

또한 당신의 후회도 내 아픔 치유하진 못하니

당신이 회개한다 한들 내 상실은 그대로이다

가해자가 떠넘긴 가혹한 십자가를 짊어지고 가는 사람에게

가해자의 회한은 별다른 위안이 되지 못한다

아, 그러나 당신이 사랑으로 흘리는 그 눈물은 진주이니

그것은 너무나 값지어 당신의 모든 악행 보상하는구나 

Why didst thou promise such a beauteous day

And make me travel forth without my cloak,

To let base clouds o'ertake me in my way,

Hiding thy brav'ry in their rotten smoke?

'Tis not enough that through the cloud thou break,

To dry the rain on my storm-beaten face.

For no man well of such a salve can speak

That heals the wound and cures not the disgrace.

Nor can thy shame give physic to my grief;

Though thou repent, yet I have still the loss.

The offender’s sorrow lends but weak relief

To him that bears the strong offense’s cross.

  Ah, but those tears are pearl which thy love sheds,

  And they are rich, and ransom all ill deeds.
